I can’t pinpoint the moment when #Menswear become a low-key obsession that would change how I see retail and clothing, I do know that once my eyes were opened to that world it was impossible to ever look back.
Some time in early 2016 I had the pleasure of visiting the Knickerbocker Manufacturing facility in Brooklyn, somewhere close to the Queens & Brooklyn borough lines. I was there to photograph an emerging Designer, it was my first assignment as a photographer, I was pretty excited, I knew we were going to a manufacturing facility. All I can say is that I wasn’t ready for the amazing things that I saw…
I really love learning how things are made, and about the people who make them.
Being someone who could spend countless hours looking at suits and denim, in store, online or in magazines, being in an actual garment manufacturing facility was mind-blowing.
I saw that making a shirt could be a Blood, Sweat & Tears process
The space was filled with fabrics, sewing machines, outlines, manikins and of course a half-pipe.
It was a great experience to see Designers in their creative element, styling models and making immediate alterations for their photoshoots. Being abel to see someone produce a shirt by hand is something you’ll never forget, it gave me an even greater since of appreciation for American Craftsmanship.
Whenever you have a chance to visit the workshop of craftsmen, a true artisan, be sure to do it and appreciate the experience.
Peace!
